VACUUM INTERRUPTER (VI) The Internal construction of a typical VI is as shown in the picture. The level of vacuum is 10-6 torr. The contact separation causes the establishment of arc between contacts. The arc burns in the metal vapours evaporated; the metal vapour condense on contact surface as well as on the metal vapour condensing shield. At current zero the arc ceases and the circuit voltage is isolated internally by rapidly improved dielectric strength between contacts & insulating envelope externally. The special contacts material used in the contactor so that chopping current & in turn over voltages are reduced enhanching the life of contactor. CONCEPT It is well known that high vacuum is the best dielectric available for switching a high power electrical circuit. It enables designers to have minimum contact sepration, low mechanism energy & hence makes the design compact.
